About Laird Memorials
Laird memorials is a family run business, started over 75 years ago by my grandfather Barney Laird
Barney left school at 13 and started learning his trade as a letter cutter, engraving names on headstones with a hammer and chisel. He would travel to all the graveyards in the area on his push bike and his bag of tools. As a young boy, during the summer holidays I would go with him on my bike and he would teach me his trade. Watching him work I knew this is what I wanted to do when I grew up.
His son Gerard, my father, took the business on in the early 1980’s. Using a sand blaster to engrave the names, whilst using old fashioned methods to hand cut all the templates, a practice we still use to this day.
Though we primarily work in County Down and Belfast, we have served many generations of families across the whole Island of Ireland. Providing a professional, quality service to hundreds of families.
